A 7-week programme to design and make Jewellery in teams
Service Description
A 7- week immersive programme for young people to work in teams to design and make their own jewellery items to sell. Goal: Each team will design, cost, pitch, and manufacture a batch of viable, sellable products (15 items per team) using reclaimed wood or acrylic plastic. Week 1: Introduction & Ideation. Introduction to laser cutting and the benefits of local vs. overseas manufacturing. Teams receive their brief to design a professional laser-cut accessory. Students use laptops to research trends. Homework: Brainstorm specific style concepts. Week 2: CAD/CAM & Design. A deep dive into how laser cutting and CAD/CAM technology work. Each team finalises the design for their specific product. Week 3: Prototyping & Planning. We bring in a physical laser-cut sample of each team's design. Students calculate their profit margins and decide on a retail price. Teams create a production plan for construction, painting, and packaging. Learn about Sum Up and Etsy. Week 4: Manufacturing and hands-on production. Teams work together to begin building and decorating their batch of 15 products. Week 5: Finishing & Quality Control. Final assembly, painting, and packaging to ensure the products are market-ready. Week 6: Marketing & Pitch Prep. Teams learn about marketing strategies and build a short presentation outlining their product, production costs, retail price, target market, and projected sales. Week 7: The Live Pitch. Teams pitch their jewellery business to a local guest jewellery designer, receiving real-world feedback and advice. Costs: 10 Pupils: Structure: 2 teams. 2 unique products designed. 30 total products manufactured to sell. Standard Cost: £1,950 (£195 per pupil) 20 Pupils: Structure: 4 teams. 4 unique products designed. 60 total products manufactured to sell per term. Standard Cost: £2,900 per term (due to economies of scale, the rate is reduced to £145 per pupil).
